Overview
The Tanzania Research and Conservation Organization (TRCO) is implementing a
community-driven restoration initiative aimed at rehabilitating degraded
ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience in
vulnerable landscapes. The project focuses on restoring wetlands, riverine
systems, and forest ecosystems that are critical for sustaining livelihoods,
water resources, and wildlife. Through participatory approaches, TRCO works
closely with local communities, government authorities, and conservation
stakeholders to ensure long-term sustainability and ownership of restoration
efforts.
Project Goals
- Restore degraded ecosystems and improve habitat connectivity
- Enhance water availability and watershed functions
- Strengthen community resilience to climate change
- Promote sustainable natural resource management
Our Approach
TRCO applies an integrated and science-based approach to restoration, combining ecological knowledge with community engagement:
1. Ecosystem Restoration
TRCO restores degraded wetlands, riverbanks, and forest areas to improve ecosystem health and biodiversity. This is achieved through tree planting using native species that are well adapted to local conditions, as well as supporting assisted natural regeneration to allow ecosystems to recover naturally. These efforts help restore critical habitats, improve soil stability, and enhance water retention in the landscape
2. Community Engagement
TRCO works closely with local communities to ensure restoration efforts are inclusive and sustainable. The organization supports the establishment of community-based restoration groups, provides capacity building and environmental education, and promotes participatory land-use planning. This approach empowers communities to take ownership of natural resource management and ensures that restoration activities align with local needs and priorities.
3. Sustainable Livelihoods
To reduce pressure on natural ecosystems, TRCO promotes sustainable livelihood options for local communities. This includes supporting alternative income-generating activities, introducing energy-efficient technologies to reduce dependence on forest resources, and encouraging the development of nature-based enterprises. These initiatives help improve household incomes while promoting conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.
