Pangolin Conservation Project in the Greater Gombe-Mahale-Moyowosi Ecosystems

The Tanzania Research and Conservation Organization (TRCO) has implemented the Gombe–Mahale–Muyowosi Pangolin Project in 2025-2026 to improve understanding of pangolin distribution, threats, and conservation needs in western Tanzania. Through community surveys, stakeholder consultations, and field assessments, the project documented local knowledge of pangolin occurrence, investigated patterns of use and illegal trade, and identified key conservation challenges facing Giant Ground, White-bellied, and Temminck’s pangolins. The project also engaged local communities, conservation practitioners, and government authorities to generate baseline information, raise awareness about pangolin conservation, and provide evidence to guide future monitoring, management, and policy interventions. This project was funded by the Rufford Foundation.
